In April 2017, FINE held three events at the 2017 annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in San Antonio, Texas. The FINE Forum, held on Wednesday 26 April, was the flagship event and was attended by 18 students and staff from eight institutions. The broad theme of the Forum was ‘How to work with…’. An international panel provided presentations around the theme of the forum, followed by a panel discussion of approximately 40 minutes.
- Professor Blye Frank, University of British Columbia
- Dr Sinikka Neuhaus, Lund University
- Professor Raj Mestry, University of Johannesburg
- Associate Professor David Moss, University of Connecticut

The second part of the forum was a workshop focusing on the transition process from PhD to beyond. Forum participants agreed that a significant challenge for graduate and early career researchers is navigating the academy and other career paths. Discussion centred on how to build a career narrative and how to navigate the global academic landscape. One of the outcomes of the workshop was to create a range of resources that address employment opportunities across international contexts throughout the next year.
Forum attendees reconvened for dinner after the Forum at Biga on the Banks. In addition, two FINE breakfast meetings were held on 28 and 30 April attended by 16 and 20 participants respectively. A breakdown of participants by institutions is provided in Table 1.

We would like to thank all the participants who attended this year’s FINE events at AERA. We believe that everybody gained not only insights about academia, but also build collaborative and personal relationships that would last a long time.
The FINE Leadership team is looking to expand our activities at the 2017 European Educational Research Association (ECER) in Copenhagen and/or the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI) in Finland. We will keep you posted.
